Fresh fall color scheme

I know what you’re thinking, why are we talking about fall decor in the middle of August ?

As a designer I say it’s never to early to start preparing a fresh new seasonal design scheme for your home

Fall is the time of year when we start preparing for the cold months ahead. It’s when nesting takes center stage since for most of us, our time will be spent indoors

So I wanted to share a few tips on how to bring in not only the traditional warm colors of fall that we all know and love, but also how by adding in saturated (shaded) cool colors you can elevate your decor, creating a fresh professional designer look to your home

Creating a warm, cozy and inviting home is always our goal

Inviting casual farmhouse look

Incorporating colors from the cool side of the color wheel is a wonderful way to add elegance and contrast not only to your seasonal decor, but to your everyday interior elements

When designing for fall and winter we automatically go to the warm side of the color wheel, incorporating the reds, oranges and yellows

But try mixing in saturated or (shaded) cool colors into your designs with blues, greens & violets. Instead of using brown, rust or black as your neutral, try using white, cream or silver

To learn more on how to design with cool & warm colors please read design session # 5 (part 1 & 2) the wonderful world of color and discover that brilliant tool, the color wheel !

Here are a few examples:

Another neutral I love to use in a fall color scheme is copper. Not only does it add a natural earthy element, it adds in texture with a brilliant sparkle and shine

Incorporate elements from nature, like acorns, grapevines, moss and leaves

Let’s not forget to set the table !

Consider a light and bright table setting instead of a dark and dreary one. A beautiful table setting not only welcomes your guest’s but sets the stage for the rest of your home

Designer tip:

When designing a room no matter the season always consider the (soft scapes)

The soft scapes in a design are:

  • Window treatment fabrics
  • Area rugs
  • Upholstery fabrics
  • Throw pillows
  • Lampshades

When using a fabric that has a sheen to it, such as a silk or chintz

These fabrics (reflect light) creating a cool sense of mood in the room

Fabric with a sheen

When using fabrics with a lot of texture such as wool, suede, corduroy or burlap

These fabrics (absorb light) creating a warm sense of mood in the room

Textured fabric

So fill your home with rich color, earthy elements & tons of texture for fall & winter !

Textured shades
Accent pillows
Distressed turquoise cabinet
Warm sofa blanket
Knit floor pouf

Let’s not forget about the area rug !

For me the addition of an area rug is like icing on the cake

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the fall season into your home is by adding a gorgeous area rug

What is so great about area rugs is that you can cycle them out when the season is over, and then replace it with one that reflects the new season

But be sure not to stop in just the living areas of your home, consider adding a series of coordinating runners in the kitchen, foyer and mudroom, this will give your home a sense of uniformity and create a wonderful backdrop for your fall-inspired decor & accents
