Inspirational and creative work space

These days so many of us are trading in our corporate work spaces for a more relaxing environment. Whether it’s full time or part time, it seems we are all choosing to spend more of our time in the comfortable surroundings of a home office

I remember my mother’s desk was a small roll up tucked in the corner of her bedroom where she would jot down a recent recipe she found in Good Housekeeping, and write out the monthly household bills

Today, most homes are built with a dedicated home office space, and by incorporating these few essential elements, you will enhance your productivity, comfort and style

As I share in session # 3 (selecting a style) If you are starting fresh with no direction or idea of what style of room you want to design, then the best place to start would be to sit back and envision how you want the room to look. Do you want a casual look, a rustic farmhouse look, or do you prefer a sleek contemporary look?

As they say, the best place to start is always at the beginning

So to begin selecting a style that is right for you, start with the primary or focal piece of furniture for that specific room – in this case the desk

Select a desk that fits your needs but still stays in line with the overall style of your space. For instance, if you are an architect, drafter, artist or crafter, you will need a spacious desk with a raised platform to provide a comfortable work surface. There are a variety of styles out there that offer an industrial, modern or contemporary look, so be sure to choose one that represents you and your style

In contrast, some people just need a sturdy surface on which to set their computer. A streamlined writing desk is the perfect option for this. But lets say you need storage, you can look for an option that offer drawers or purchase additional file cabinets for all your storage needs. There are 100’s of options out there, so take your time and make sure you are selecting the one that fits your needs and style the best

If you sit for an extended period of time, the best chair to select would be an ergonomic office chair. These chairs are designed with several adjustment options so they fit every size and shape. They make movement easier and are built for comfort. Choose a style and color that best fits your design

It is so important to work in a well-lit room. So when you are designing your space be sure to include both an overhead lighting fixture, such as a hanging pendant or a stylish chandelier. along with a table/desk top lighting fixture. If your space is limited on natural light, you may also want to consider installing wall mirrors in the room, they will help reflect more light and increase the room’s illumination

Area rugs:

When designing any room in your home even the office space, the addition of an area rug not only defines the space, but adds in another layer of style. The rug you choose should be large enough to extend under the desk, plus allow you to push your desk chair out comfortably

If you are starting a design from scratch or looking to re-fresh your office, please read my (6) guidelines to good design. These guidelines apply to any and all rooms in your home.
